Accidentals are the next crucial aspect of music theory which we’re going to cover here. The first type of accidental we’ll cover are sharps. Sharps make the note sound a bit higher by raising it by a semi-tone. The symbol for a sharp looks very similar to that of a hashtag, which comes in very handy when you’re composing on your laptop.

In the video below you will hear two notes, the first is a middle C, and the second note is a sharpened middle C, which sounds a bit higher. The difference is very slight, so congratulations if you hear it the first time. It may take a few repeats to notice the difference.
