Robert Nathaniel Dett

Robert Nathaniel Dett was a Canadian American composer, organist, pianist, choral directir, and music professor. He moved to America when he was 11. He was known for his use of African American folk songs and spirituals as the basis for choral and piano compositions in Romantic style. As a child, he showed interest for piano at 3. He was highly educated. In 1907 he completed his first degree at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He continued to study music throughout his life.
