Born in 1959, Adina Izarra is a modern Venezuelan composer. She attended York University, England, where she studied composition and earned a Ph.D.. At present, Adina directs the Postgraduate Music Programme and the Digital Music Laboratory at the Simón Bolívar University in Venezuela.
Throughout her lifetime, Izarra has had a love for birds. Her first work to include birdsong was “Plumismo” (featherism). This is designed for a solo piccolo, and mimics the sound of birds:

Some of Adina’s other pieces which were inspired by birds include: Pitangus sulphuratus, elCristofué (1987), Querrequerres (1991), and Cadenza con Guacharacas (2010).
Adina has composed extensively for the flute and the guitar, and is now focussing upon electronic music and video art. Consonance (sounds not clashing with each other) has always been prioritized over tonality, in Izarra’s works.
Likewise, Adina has been an active member of a number of organizations in Venezuela, such as the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), RedAsla, and is the only women member at the Collegium of Latin American composers. She has taken part in many Latin-American festivals (such as Visiones Sonoras), and has represented Venezuela many times at the ISCM. Similarly, Izarra’s flute works are frequently mentioned in academic works on contemporary Latin-American compositions.
