Black Lives Matter in Music

Whilst racism towards black people has very recently come to the forefront of the media’s attention, inequality between black people and other races has existed ever since the West first ‘discovered’ Africa. Racism, in all its blatant and subtle forms, has disadvantaged many areas of life for black people. This includes the opportunities that they have had in the Classical music industry. Whilst there have been many successful black artists in popular music, classical music remains a white dominated art form. There are many reasons for this. It is the combination of a lack of representation discouraging young people and the financial disadvantage black people have (Classical music education is expensive). In Classical music, it is important that we recognise and encourage black artists so that we can bring social justice and racially reconciliate. This is why I am doing an A – Z of black composers. All of these composers are valued not just because they are black, but because they are composers worthy of praising for their incredible work.
