A note is the name for a musical sound (or tone) created by a musical instrument. This term is also used generally for the symbols which represent sounds on paper. So, the notes you play on any instrument can be written down on paper, and this is how music gets preserved. For example, take this series of notes:

Notes can be high or low (pitch), and long or short (rhythm), and the musical annotation represents these two aspects of the notes.
